What are the Pros vs. Cons of Open Source Software?
There are many pros and cons of purchasing an open source software solution. A company must seriously evaluate their needs and whether or not they would benefit from using an open source MES (Manufacturing Execution System) or ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system. Consumers must also take into consideration what the software supplier means by open source, the meaning could vary greatly from supplier to supplier. The pros of an open source software are simple. Ultimately, you will eliminate many in-house costs that would accumulate over time during the creation and implementation of your software. Your company’s ability to innovate and change your software makes better use of your time, which ultimately helps you outperform your competitors.

A few cons to open source software is that the development phase is a bit longer than purchasing a canned solution. With that being said, working with a software company that is developing your software for you is much shorter than implementing your own software solution through your IT. You will also walk away with a software system that works for you, not a system that your business must conform to. If you have a canned software solution you will be forced to upgrade when technology changes occur every 7-10 years. If you have open source software, your software will need to be rewritten but you will be able to maintain your same logic. Plus you will have the option to modify your software as your business needs change.
As always, if you are concerned with cost, look for a company that offers SaaS (Software as a Service) or an ASP (Application Service Provider).
